The PMFME scheme, launched under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), is a landmark initiative aimed at transforming India’s vast unorganized micro food processing sector. This sector, which comprises over 25 lakh micro enterprises, is often informal, traditional, and family-run, operating without access to modern technology, standard certifications, or institutional credit. These micro units, despite playing a vital role in preserving India’s culinary diversity and generating rural livelihoods, have long remained outside the formal economy. The PMFME scheme brings these enterprises into the mainstream by offering them financial assistance, capacity building, skill development, infrastructure support, and market access.
The scheme adopts a unique “One District One Product (ODOP)” approach, promoting specialization and scaling of locally grown, culturally significant products such as jackfruit in Kerala, turmeric in Tamil Nadu, or millets in Karnataka. PMFME focuses on encouraging individual and group-based micro food processors to upgrade their units, enhance product quality, adopt modern packaging and branding, and comply with food safety standards. For individual entrepreneurs, the scheme offers a 35% credit-linked capital subsidy (up to ₹10 lakh), significantly reducing the financial burden of setting up or upgrading a food business. For Self Help Groups (SHGs), Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), and cooperatives, the scheme provides additional support for infrastructure development, common processing facilities, incubation centers, and marketing assistance.
PMFME is especially inclusive, giving preference to women entrepreneurs, SC/ST groups, and individuals from economically weaker backgrounds, thereby ensuring equitable growth. It also integrates training, EDP (Entrepreneurship Development Programs), branding support, labelling, barcoding, and digital marketing — everything a micro-unit needs to evolve into a viable, competitive enterprise. The scheme encourages formalization through FSSAI registration, Udyam/MSME certification, and bank linkage. With the right guidance, even a small home-based business can grow into a profitable food brand. At ADIT FINSAGE ADVISORY, we specialize in helping such entrepreneurs realize their full potential through the PMFME scheme — from project report creation and subsidy application to licensing, training, and post-loan support.
